Perimenopause: Is There a Punch Card for This Shit?

Peri Much? | Issue #001

I have a question.

Is there a limit to how many perimenopause symptoms one woman can collect? Because I feel like I should be earning points by now.

Hot flashes? Check.

Night sweats? Obviously.

Brain fog? I think so, but I can't remember.

Achy joints? Sure, why not?

Anxiety? Oh, that's a fun addition.

Vaginal atrophy?

I'm sorry. WHAT?

Vaginal. Atrophy.

Those are two words I never expected to use together when describing my own body.

Atrophy sounds like something that happens to an abandoned building. Not my vagina. Is there a maintenance schedule I missed?

And here's the thing. It's not even any one symptom that gets me. It's the sheer number of them.

Every time I think I've figured something out, my body introduces another surprise.

Apparently, perimenopause has an unlimited budget for new material.

Could Someone Please Tell Me What's Next?

Here's what gets me about all of this.

I genuinely work hard to take care of myself. My physical health, my mental health, my overall well-being. I'm curious, I like learning, and if there's something that might help me feel better, I'm willing to explore it.

But lately, taking care of myself feels like a full-time job with absolutely terrible benefits.

Within the last month, I received an ADHD diagnosis.

ADHD. Well, there's a plot twist I didn't see coming.

Apparently, hormonal changes during perimenopause can make ADHD symptoms more noticeable, including ones that may have flown under the radar for years.

Interesting. So naturally, I started exploring treatment options.

Which means medication changes. Which means side effects.

And guess what?

MORE SWEATING!

And just when I thought my punch card was getting full…

HEART PALPITATIONS!

Oh, good. Because what I really needed while trying to manage my anxiety was to become intensely aware of my own heartbeat while sitting perfectly still.

Is it the medication? The hormones? Anxiety? Some delightful combination of all three?

I'm not trying to turn back the clock. I'm just trying to enjoy the damn clock while it's still ticking.

But every time I think I've figured something out, there's another symptom, another question, another treatment to consider, or another side effect to sort through.

I'm just trying to feel better, and somehow I've acquired an entirely new set of problems to investigate.

At this point, I think I deserve continuing education credits for managing my own body.

So Why Am I Laughing?

Because I have to.

Seriously.

That doesn't mean any of this is easy. Some of it is genuinely miserable. Some of it is scary. And some of it has made me question things about myself that I thought I understood pretty well.

But I refuse to let this chapter of my life become one long list of everything that's going wrong.

There is still so much to enjoy.

I still want to learn things, try things, laugh at ridiculous situations, take care of myself, and find joy in everyday life.

And if I can laugh about the fact that my vagina apparently has its own retirement plan, I'm going to.

Because sometimes laughter is the only reasonable response.

Enter Peri Much?

Here's what I've discovered along the way.

There are things that help.

Not everything. Not every time. And certainly not the same things for every woman.

But I've found things that have made a difference for me, and I love learning what other women have discovered.

I also love that we're finally talking about this stuff more openly.

Women are sharing experiences, comparing notes, asking better questions, and building communities around something that far too many of us were never properly prepared for.

I want Peri Much? to be one of those places.

Somewhere we can laugh about the ridiculous parts, talk about the difficult parts, and share the things that might make life a little easier.

We'll talk about hormones, symptoms, mental health, relationships, getting older, and all the unexpected nonsense that comes with this stage of life.

There will be funny stories. Probably some swearing. Helpful information. Interesting discoveries. Products worth trying and products that deserve to be publicly shamed for wasting our money.

And I'm sure I'll have plenty of my own ridiculous experiences to contribute.

I'm not here because I've figured it all out.

I'm here because I haven't.

And I'm guessing I'm not alone.

Okay, Your Turn.

What's happening in your hormonal circus? What's helping? What's making you question your sanity?

I'd love to hear your stories, especially the ridiculous ones. And if you've discovered something that genuinely helps, please share that too.

This is exactly the kind of community I want to build. One where we can laugh, learn from each other, and hopefully make this whole experience a little easier.
